Fox & i an uncommon friendship7/5/2023 Fox and I is a poignant and remarkable tale of friendship, growth, and coping with inevitable loss-and of how that loss can be transformed into meaning. Friends, however, cannot save each other from the uncontained forces of nature. From the fox, she learned the single most important thing about loneliness: we are never alone when we are connected to the natural world. Her scientific training had taught her not to anthropomorphize animals, yet as she grew to know him, his personality revealed itself and they became friends. How do you even talk to a fox? She brought out her camping chair, sat as close to him as she dared, and began reading to him from The Little Prince. She had never had a regular visitor before. Then one day she realized that a mangy-looking fox was showing up on her property every afternoon at 4:15 p.m. In the meantime, she taught remotely and led field classes in nearby Yellowstone National Park. She was as emotionally isolated as she was physically, but she viewed the house as a way station, a temporary rest stop where she could gather her nerves and fill out applications for what she hoped would be a real job that would help her fit into society. When Catherine Raven finished her PhD in biology, she built herself a tiny cottage on an isolated plot of land in Montana. An unforgettable memoir about the friendship between a solitary woman and a wild fox. One Foot in Laos by Dervla Murphy7/5/2023 "synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title. A series of chance meetings left her with a profound sense of a beautiful country and a unique culture threatened-once again-by the extreme pressures of the modern world. But she also discovered that the persisting problems bequeathed by its recent past are tragic and other problems threaten its immediate future. When renowned travel writer Dervla Murphy went to Laos in 1997, she discovered a country that had only just opened its borders to the West. Although she begins in Vientiane, Murphy quickly gets off the. By the time of the ceasefire in February 1973, Laos had become the most heavily bombed nation in the history of the world. Dervla Murphy, a dauntless sixtysomething woman from Ireland, decides to explore Laos on foot. But the biggest bully in its history was the United States which, starting in 1964, carried on a "secret war" against Laos. Nestled between Vietnam to the east, Myanmar and China to the north, Thailand to the west and Cambodia to the south, Laos has long suffered from the depredations of its larger neighbors. The celts nora chadwick7/5/2023 The Celtic languages have probably been spoken in the British Isles for more than three thousand years they were brought by newcomers, perhaps already in the Bronze Age before 1000 B.C., and reinforced in the Iron Age after 500 B.C. This extension of meaning is a convenient one and will be adopted throughout this book. In general speech, however, the term has come to be used in a wider sense of the people speaking one or other of the various branches of the Celtic languages, and then, by a further extension, of their countries. There is no 'Celtic' race or group of tribes, or any 'Celtic' area. Strictly speaking the term 'Celtic' is a linguistic one, and refers to a branch of the Indo-European languages. The peoples speaking a Celtic language are the earliest Britons of whom we have written records. The text and engravings are in the public domain. Ship of Fools by Richard Paul Russo7/5/2023 The definitive literary realization of the topos is Die Narrenschiff ( 1494 trans Alexander Barclay as The Shyp of Folys of the Worlde 1509) by Sebastian Brant (1457-1521) there are many later (much improved) translations, as partially described in Aurelius Pompen's The English Versions of the Ship of Fools ( 1925). A traditional Fantasy theme dating back to medieval times, in which a ship – the Narrenschiff or Ship of Fools – carries all sorts of persons on an endless voyage in search of Utopia, providing an easily visualizable literal vehicle for allegorical Satire on the follies of humanity, the most famous such vehicle probably being "The Ship of Fools" ( before 1500) by Hieronymus Bosch ( circa 1450-1516). The chemical garden trilogy book 17/5/2023 It had the reader guessing and asking questions and only by reading were the answers going to come to you. This novel was well written and put together. One is older then her and the other is younger, but they all end up like sisters, caring for each other, but Rhine hates it and wants to escape so she tries to, though it takes them simple planning to escape this place. A girl named Rhine is taken away from her twin and forced to be one of Linden’s three wives. Now imagine that once you become of age as a girl you can be kidnapped to become married to a man to create more life before you die. Imagine a world where men die at age 25, and women at 20. Wither by: Lauren DeStefano: The first novel in the Chemical Garden trilogy. Her stories all deal with a dystopian world, which makes it that much easier to fall into the story. I’m also a big fan of DeStefano’s writing, I’m actually currently reading another series by her, (which I should have up by the end of the week) and I love it just as much as I loved the Chemical Garden trilogy. Hi! I’m sorry I didn’t post Friday, this blog was supposed to go up Friday but I got sidetracked and so here it is today! Lauren DeStefano’s Chemical Garden trilogy. Joan of arc pernoud7/4/2023 Although not a contemporary of Joan Darc, one duke sounds especially interesting - Mary the Rich. At least the dukes in Burgundy had memorable names like John the Bold and John the Good. If you hope to keep all the Henrys, Charles, Louis and their uncles, wives and mothers straight, I suggest you find charts of the royal families of England and France. The section is sufficient if you already know some of the information – I think it would be confusing if you did not. The first chapter summarizes two key political events, the Hundred Years War between England and France, and the period of multiple Popes it was written by the translator Jeremy Duquesnay Adams. The author, Regine Pernoud, was a member of the prestigious Academie Francaise, and the founder of Centre Jeanne Darc. The book is not an easy read, but if you prefer facts to fluff it will satisfy and keep you enthralled once the essential groundwork is laid. In this thorough biography, Regine Pernoud meticulously lays out the short career of the woman warrior and martyr. Actually it was Jeanette Darc – no apostrophe, no nobility but lots of passion. Reading Aloud Age: I read this to my children ages 8 and 12 and both of them enjoyed it, and I was surprised how much the 8-yo got out of it.It was long and kind of hard for me to pay attention, but the general plot was quite interesting Couldn't understand the words, and I'm in the HIGHER lexile group, it's so long and boring I didn't like it at all! From these two mysteries, Rosemary Sutcliffe weaves the story of Marcus Flavius Aquila, the son of the Commander of the Ninth Legion who embarks on a quest to recover the lost eagle standard of the Ninth, the symbol of the Legion's and his family's honour. Then, during the excavations at Silchester nearly 1800 years later, a wingless Roman eagle was unearthed. Some time around AD 117-119, the Ninth Legion marched northwards into the wilds of Britain beyond Agricola's wall, to deal with a rising among the Caledonian tribes, and disappeared without trace. |
